Vivir por nada o morir por algo: Perù Inka Challenge 2010 (dia 2 - inicio de competencia, dk series) // Entrevista Riptide a Jorge Hurtado // Videos

El día de ayer tuvimos la oportunidad de ir al primer día de competencia del PIC 2010. Los jueces, después de resolver algunos inconvenientes decidieron arrancar con los heats DK. Se definió el área que se consideraría de competencia (ya que habían por lo menos 3 picos en toda la playa). Las olas de 1 a 1.5 metros, las series si venían de dos metros. El sol empezaba a salir y los pros que no competían se fueron al pico derecho que estaba bombeando olas de mínimo dos metros hasta los 3 metros y por momentos nos distraían del evento principal.

El poco público presente, no éramos mas de 100 personas, ocupó la orilla y con el brillo solar que asomaba anunciaba un gran día. Grandes nombres del DK, como los rankeados Dave Hubbard, Ardiel Jimenez, Cesar Bauer y Dave Winchester y otras estrellas que solo veíamos en videos como Grant Moloney y Kim Feast. En los locales, destacaban los Galdós, Javier Araujo, La Mascara Sotelo, Nikaido, Hurtado y Saavedra.

Sorprendía ver en los heats al actual #1 Amaury Lavernhe, a Ryan Hardy y al buen Emiliano Tabaré recogiendo sus lycras.

Series de 25 minutos y a punta de slashes, 360s y rollers se iban luciendo. Llegaron al round 3 Kiko, Hurtado, Araujo y Bauer. Por el lado de los aussies Kim Feast sólido, Winny con su estilazo y Grant Molony que perfil bajo avanzaba, siempre verificando sus scores al final de cada heat.

Pasado el mediodía llegarían los cuartos de final, el famoso man to man que dejaba en el primer heat al peruano Cesar Bauer vs el campeón vigente Dave Hubbard. La lucha fue intensa, con cada ola cambiaban de posiciones, finalmente un tubo y un snap en el lip le dieron la clasificación al peruano y lo convierte en favorito.

En el siguiente heat entraba Chupamangos, Javier Araujo que iba frente a Kim Feast. La lucharon todo el tiempo, las series que venían se cerraban y Feast se puso delante con una ventaja de 4.63, el tiempo se agotó y no alcanzó. Igual para destacar lo de Javier, en su primer Grand Slam dejó fuera de competencia a gente del peso de Emiliano Tabaré y Micah Mc Mullin.

Para cerrar la ronda Ryan Hardy se encontraba con su compatriota Grant Maloney que para ese momento ya no creía en nadie y lo sacó. Ardiel le cerró el paso a Winchester recordándole porque es el #2 del mundo detrás de Dubb.

Lo que nos mantuvo atentos fue el free riding que se dio todo el día en el pico derecho de la playa (Epico). Aussies, hawaianos, peruanos y demás nacionalidades se ganaron con las buenísimas olas que tuvo Chilca Point Pucusana en este primer día de competencia.

The Chilca beach turned it on for the first day of the Peruvian Inka Challenge 2010. The day was strictly a drop knee day where 3 rounds of DK riders where surfed. The glassy waves, around 3 to 4 feet on the sets offered the ideal conditions to run the division.
The surprises where the elimination of the current world champion Dave Hubbard to the Peruvian Cesar Bauer and to the Australian top DK rider Dave Winchester to the Canary Ardiel Jimenez.
The standout of the day to Ryan Hardy who's not used to participate in DK events and now is already at the semifinal stage of the first DK Grand Slam event of the tour. "The Aussies guys are putting some money on me so that's why I'm participating on this division. There is so much pressure on the prone, that I'm enjoying to have some fun in the DK."

Interview with Peruvian Jorge Hurtado - the runner-up in the 2009 Peru Inka Challenge.

This interview of Jorge by PIC organiser Jose Urgate was planned for the magazine last year, but was pulled just before the mag went to the printers. After having a scratch around our hard-drives we found it again and hope you enjoy the read.

Jose: How old are you?
Jorge: 26

Can you tell us about where you grew up?
In Arica Beach, 35 km south of Lima, district of Lurin. Small summer town with sandy beaches.

How did you start bodyboarding?
I used to wait until some guys lent me their bodyboards, but sometimes they didn´t want to, so I went home a few times very sad for that, until one day, Juan Manuel and "El Muerto", saw me learning too fast and gave me an old board like a gift, then the other guys stoked about myself getting better than them on a really shitty board.

What do you love about bodyboarding?
Get in to the barrels and do the tricks, feel the nature and forget about my problems.

Explain to us how the competition went for you?
It was really good for me, since the begining I was focused on having Peru´s name very high. I felt confident about making it to the Final with the conditions we have by those days.

How did you feel being in the Final with Jeff Hubbard?
It was something I never imagined, neighter in a dream, but while advancing in the heats I notice that it would teach me a lot and I think it´s part of the Peruvian History of Bodyboarding now.

What is the future of Peruvian bodyboarding?
With this result, I think bodyboarding will grow a lot, I can see new generations after me doing great moves and riding big waves, so I hope soon they will represent well the Peruvian Bodyboarding in the world. Keep following your goals and you can do everything !!

Will we see you in Australia chasing waves in the future?
That´s my dream, to ride the Aussies waves, they are the best. I don´t have the cash to do it now, but I would love to make it one day. Amazing waves in OZ mate!

Video del dia de ayer jueves 27 de mayo del 2010, primer dia de competencia en el que se corrieron solo las series de Dropknee, lastima que nadie grabo la sesion de free riding en el pico derecho de la playa, no paro de bombear olas de 2 a 3 metros de altura, tubulares, algunos con salida y unas rampas espectaculares que permitieron que los Pros de la talla de Amaury Lavernhe, Pierre Louis Costes, Ben Player, Jake Stone o como el peruano Edgar "Liro" Acevedo, volaran, se encuartaran y disfrutaran de esa adrenalina adictiva que solo una ola como Chilca te puede brindar.
